Oil cow

Glossary

Oil cow is a historic Styrian wooden press: a massive log with a hollow in which two wooden inserts pressed the roasted pumpkin seed mash.

In the context of Styrian pumpkin seed oil: the roasted mash used to be pressed in the so-called Styrian oil cow by forcing two wooden inserts together. The work was called "beating out the oil" because a wooden wedge had to be driven in. Hydraulic ram presses later replaced this wooden device.
