PGI means protected geographical indication: an EU origin label for foods with a proven link to a region.
Styrian pumpkin seed oil has had PGI protection since 1996. Growing and pressing areas are not identical. Growing is allowed in defined parts of Styria, Burgenland and Lower Austria. Pressing, according to the official description, may take place in defined districts of Styria and southern Burgenland. The label protects the name and regional origin, not a separate quality grade beyond the specification.
