What Does PGI Mean?

The abbreviation PGI stands for Protected Geographical Indication. Only a few selected specialties in Europe are allowed to carry this abbreviation.

The EU regulation No. 1151/2012 on quality schemes for agricultural products and footstuffs prescribes that it is sufficient for a protected geographical indication (PGI) if one of the production stages (production, processing or production) has taken place in a certain region of origin. In the case of strict EU registrations, a precisely defined reference to origin as well as the historical development of this product must be documented. The protection of origin is a topic in Styria but also all over Europe. This is shown by the efforts of the European Union: Massive information and advertising campaigns for retailers and consumers have been launched to promote regional products with protection of origin.
