During a vacation this past July in Vienna, my wife and I had the pleasure of coming across a unique vegetable oil that, although relatively unknown in this country, is a staple of food culture throughout Austria as well as in Slovenia, Croatia and Hungary.
I did some research on the Web and learned that the pumpkin was introduced to Europe by Columbus following his expeditions to the Americas, and by the 1700s enterprising Austrian farmers had discovered that a versatile oil could be extracted from its seeds. In addition to being a culinary delicacy, it was thought to have medicinal powers, especially in treating prostate disorders and sexual dysfunctions. There was even interest in utilizing it as a lubricant for the military.
